What is a Mesa?
A mesa is a landform with a flat area on top and steep walls, usually occuring in dry areas. Mesas are found in the southwest and other dry climates. They are elevated rock formations and have flat tops. They also have steep sides or cliffs. In order to be a mesa it must be one to four miles in area. The top of the mesa is made of harder rock so it does not erode as easily. A mesa is bigger then a butte but smaller then a plateau.
